Since the 1970s, Kerala’s quarrying industry has grown from manual methods to modern, mechanized operations supplying granite Building Stone for the state’s infrastructure. Driven by construction demand and regulated by state authorities, the sector now emphasizes safety, quality, and environmental sustainability.
This website has been launched out of our concern for environmental protection and the sustainable use of natural resources. It enables us to upload and showcase the environmental protection measures adopted at our quarry.
Managing Director, VS Quarry
"Adhering to expert environmental guidance ensures we maintain a sustainable balance with nature."
Industries are the cornerstone of our nation’s economic progress. Mining and quarrying, though vital, remain among the most high-risk sectors. We fully support the strict safety laws and compliance frameworks mandated by authorities to protect our workforce and communities.
We also recognize that mining inevitably impacts the environment. That is why we engage qualified specialists to conduct thorough Environmental Impact Assessments. At our organization, we strictly adhere to their expert guidance to minimize ecological harm and ensure we maintain a sustainable balance with nature.
Granite Building Stone Quarry of Shri K.M. Stephen, commonly known as "VS Quarry", is involved in the extraction and production of Granite Building Stone from its quarry located at Karimannoor Village, Thodupuzha Taluk, Idukki District, Kerala.
The quarrying activities are carried out on land owned by the company and obtained from friends through lease agreements. The total lease area of the quarry spans 4.9003 hectares.
We extract granite building stone using controlled drilling and blasting with small-diameter, shallow holes. To ensure safety and reduce ground vibration, we use NONEL detonators and NONEL trunkline delays for all blasting operations. Large boulders are further broken down using rock breakers to meet customer requirements.
Our Granite Building Stone Rubble is produced from high-quality rock deposits and processed under stringent quality control measures to ensure strength, durability, and reliability for a wide range of construction applications.
The rubble is available in various graded sizes to meet the requirements of different engineering and construction projects, including:
Safety of personnel, machinery, and quarry operations is given the highest priority at VS Quarry. Qualified and competent certificate holders are appointed to supervise mining activities and ensure compliance with all statutory safety requirements. Employees are provided with appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including safety shoes, helmets, face masks, ear muffs, and other necessary safety gear.
To minimize dust generation, water is regularly sprinkled before drilling operations and prior to blasting activities. Internal haul roads and nearby public roads are also watered periodically to control dust emissions and maintain a safe working environment.
An Environment Management Cell (EMC) has been constituted under the leadership of the Mines Manager, reporting directly to the Managing Director. The EMC meets once every month to review environmental protection measures, plan programs, and maintain signed meeting minutes.
As part of environmental conservation, green belt development is undertaken around the quarry premises through systematic tree plantation to control dust, improve the local microclimate, and enhance the aesthetic value of the area. All afforestation and environmental protection activities are regularly monitored and reviewed by the Environment Management Cell.
